According to the AAMC, from 2011 – 2016 there was an increase in U.S. allopathic medical schools offering Masters degrees to medical students to equip them to practice in more complex, interconnected health systems, with most prevalent MD-Masters programs being MD/MPH and MD/Master of Science (MS).1 Dual-degree programs provide additional expertise for students outside of clinical training that may help them become better scientists, leaders, and physicians. They can also provide students with greater career flexibility, further the school’s mission, attract more competitive applicants, and improve residency match outcomes.1, 2, 3, 4 However, these programs differ widely from institution to institution and program to program, and examples of well-functioning, student centered programs are not showcased nationally.
