The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill experienced two incidents of gun violence in the fall of 2023. Both involved widespread campus lockdown; one involved an active shooter event with a tragic fatality. In fall 2024, Hurricane Helene caused mass destruction and devastation in Western North Carolina significantly affecting the UNC Asheville campus.
