Beginning in the 2024 AMCAS application cycle, the self-reported disadvantaged status question was replaced with Other Impactful Experiences (OIE). The OIE section is intended to bolster holistic review of medical school applicants by identifying those who align with a medical school’s mission and the intended service community. In accordance with strategic priorities, for both the Association of American Medical Colleges, Group on Student Affairs and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP), it is imperative to offer guidance and best practices to medical school applicants on how best to share their lived experiences, including but not limited to family background, community setting, financial background, and educational experience.
