A diverse healthcare workforce is associated with improved care for underserved populations, increased access to healthcare, better patient satisfaction, and enhanced patient-provider communication. While the call to increase the diversity of the health care workforce has grown louder, many areas of healthcare continue to fall short of representing the makeup of the national population. The pipeline of students entering health professions is one clear target that must be addressed, but the hiring and recognition processes for health professions faculty is another important area which requires intentional attention to increased equity and inclusion.
