Double the Degrees, Double the Impact: Successes and Challenges in Dual Degree Programs
Monday April 28, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
According to the AAMC, from 2011 – 2016 there was an increase in U.S. allopathic medical schools offering Masters degrees to medical students to equip them to practice in more complex, interconnected health systems, with most prevalent MD-Masters programs being MD/MPH and MD/Master of Science (MS).1 Dual-degree programs provide additional expertise for students outside of clinical training that may help them become better scientists, leaders, and physicians. They can also provide students with greater career flexibility, further the school’s mission, attract more competitive applicants, and improve residency match outcomes.1, 2, 3, 4 However, these programs differ widely from institution to institution and program to program, and examples of well-functioning, student centered programs are not showcased nationally.

Holistic Student Support: Practical and Effective Approaches for Today's Medical Students
Monday April 28, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
Medical education faces a critical moment as outdated, one-size-fits-all practices persist. While the AAMC Holistic Admissions framework has diversified student backgrounds, support systems have not kept pace with evolving needs. Rising stress and burnout highlight the need for Holistic Student Support (HSS), which integrates academic, personal, and professional support for student well-being. This session provides practical strategies to improve student support by addressing challenges and sharing successful practices.

Maximum Effort: An Innovative Faculty Effort Model to Transform Workload Value
Monday April 28, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
Medical educators are central to the academic learning environment. As such, it is critical that faculty effort is recognized and rewarded. Many institutions utilize annual reviews and promotion portfolios to document educator activities. Though the intent is to highlight faculty investment in patient care, research, and education, current models are not adept at capturing the dynamic nature of each individual’s academic responsibilities. Academic health centers must therefore define a customized framework that evaluates and rewards the modern medical educator. We will present best practices for the design and delivery of a model to evaluate faculty effort, customizable to the unique needs of different academic health centers. Participants will actively develop a comprehensive Faculty Effort Reporting (FER) Model that assesses all domains of educator activities. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to identify educator activities and develop a system for automatization of the faculty effort calculation.

Assessment-Driven Models in Medical Education:  Holistic Approach in Admissions and Student Success
Monday April 28, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
Often, medical school admissions processes operate in a silo. Admissions Committees do not consistently hear back about how students are doing once they enroll. Admissions criteria such as thresholds for MCAT and GPA or pre-requisite courses may not be informed by performance outcome data. Many schools also utilize some form of situational judgement test for selection or interview, and the outcomes of these admissions tools are not compared with educational data. Schools may not be engaging in consistent continuous quality improvement to ensure admissions criteria continue to be accurate or predictive of success. Student populations vary over time and evaluation of the admissions criteria is as necessary as evaluation of the curriculum.

Continuous Quality Improvement: A Cautionary Tale or Integral to Medical Student Outcomes?
Monday April 28, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
Achieving continued accreditation is a complex and ongoing process, requiring planning, evaluation, and reflection. Since 2015, the LCME has emphasized the importance of continuous quality improvement (CQI) as a proactive method to promptly identify and address potential concerns. Effective medical education hinges on CQI to enhance patient outcomes, faculty satisfaction, curricular innovation, while recognizing resource challenges and conflicting institutional priorities. CQI is key to early detection of areas prone to slippage and identifying opportunities within the health care environment, technology, and learner needs.

Using GPTs to Assist with Grading OSCE Notes
Monday April 28, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) are a valuable assessment format because they require students to demonstrate a wide range of clinical skills. However, grading student patient notes (PNs) from OSCEs is often tedious and resource intensive. Even with training, graders can apply rubrics inconsistently, leading to variability in scores for similar notes. These challenges highlight the need for more efficient, reliable, and scalable solutions.

Approaches for addressing medical student research – a Florida perspective: Endless need meets finite resources
Monday April 28, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
National Resident Matching Program reports, and several published studies addressing residency match metrics illustrate a significant rise in research conducted by medical students over the past 15 years. Although these data partially represent all medical student research, they serve as a sample highlighting a trend clearly showing stellar growth in the number of medical students publishing PubMed-indexed research (1). Interestingly, the proportions of the type of articles, fields of study, and country of origin have remained static. However, research experiences may increasingly be discussed during the residency interview. Some studies report that approximately one-quarter of interviewers ask about research regardless of specialty, research topic, and publication/presentation status of the project (2). Moreover, the recent change to pass vs. fail for the USMLE Step 1 exam has impacted how program directors and medical students view research's importance vis-à-vis the Match, especially in competitive specialties (3,4).

Engaging and Effective Hybrid & Hyflex Teaching in Medical Education: Best Practices for Success
Monday April 28, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Hybrid and hyflex teaching models, which blend online and in-person learning, have become essential in medical education since the pandemic. While these approaches enhance independent learning and problem-solving, they also present challenges in maintaining engagement and long-term knowledge retention. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) Framework, emphasizing cognitive, social, and teaching presence, supports effective hybrid learning environments. This workshop addresses the need for innovative teaching strategies as hybrid models are increasingly integrated into curricula. By focusing on the CoI framework, active learning, and practical tools, participants will develop strategies to create engaging and effective learning experiences for their students, ultimately enhancing the quality of medical education.

Flourishing in Medicine:  Do we need more personal days or perspectives?
Monday April 28, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
Despite multiple efforts to limit duty hours and increase trainee wellness, burnout remains high among medical trainees. There are limits on the extent to which time demands can be reduced without affecting patient care and educational experiences. Therefore, it is important to consider a broader perspective so that interventions do not only focus on limiting work time but also consider how to help trainees lean into sources of meaning, purpose, and connection during their training. The concept of flourishing offers a multi-dimensional, whole-person approach to tackle such challenges from new perspectives and generate novel solutions. This session will engage the audience in a thought-provoking discussion about the intersection of professional identity, student well-being, and flourishing as a physician and physician-to-be.

A focus on active learning: choosing optimal instructional methods
Monday April 28, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
Evidence of improved learning outcomes has led to an emphasis on active learning in health professions education. Many faculty are primarily experienced with didactic instruction where content is delivered from the faculty to learners in a teacher-centered process and are challenged by adopting more active, student-centered approaches. The complexity of creating an effective, engaging learning session for a given group of learners on a specific topic area is considerable and the process can be daunting for faculty facing competing demands. A menu approach including four strategies was developed at our institution, providing guidelines for choosing among Problem- based learning (PBL), Case-based learning (CBL), Team-based learning (TBL) and Peer Instruction (PI). Each strategy has a guide for use, including strengths and shortcomings, instructions for designing a session and evidence-based learner impacts. Utilizing a jigsaw method during the session, participants will analyze optimal uses of these strategies. This approach may facilitate the transition of faculty to more active learning.

Constructing an Effective Educator Portfolio to Document the Quantity, Quality, and Impact of your Teaching
Monday April 28, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EDT
Teaching remains an integral but often implicit part of medical school faculty’s daily activities [1]. However, roles of medical educators have become more complex with the growing diversity of educational and assessment approaches, the increasing focus on learner-centered education, and advances in technologies. Roles may include course organizer, facilitator, assessor, curriculum developer, and mentor in addition to the more traditional role of information provider in the clinical or classroom environment [2]. Medical school are increasingly encouraging faculty to submit an educator portfolio (EP) in support of their request for promotion. However, at times these portfolios become a large collection of materials difficult for reviewers to digest. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to a framework for collecting, organizing, and analyzing information about their work as an educator using a standardized and succinct EP template.

Nuts & Bolts of Formative Assessment in Integrated Pre-Clerkship Curriculum
Monday April 28, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EDT
In medical education, formative assessments (i.e., assessments for learning) are dynamic and directed at the future development of learners through assisted learning and self-reflection in a supportive environment. This type of assessment encourages the development of learner competence and the mastery of learning. In an era where a primary goal in healthcare education is to prepare future lifelong learners, it is imperative that educators critically appraise, and modify as necessary, the effectiveness of the use of formative assessments to achieve the goals of the institution to develop critical thinkers and self-directed learners. Conflicting with this are the old adages ‘assessment drives the curriculum’ and ‘assessment drives learning’ which often are considered a general truth that assessments must contribute to a summative grade to be effective. The goals of this session are to examine educator and learner perspectives, apply theoretical frameworks of assessment useful to developing integrated formative assessments, and address potential strategies to improve learner buy-in and educator confidence toward formative assessments.

Enhancing Access in Elective Away Rotations for Medical Students
Tuesday April 29, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
Away rotations are pivotal experiences that can significantly influence a student’s specialty choice, residency match prospects, and exposure to diverse clinical environments. However, issues such as financial constraints, limited availability, and systemic biases often limit the access of marginalized students to these rotations. Some programs and scholarships aimed at helping students fund these electives have been significantly altered following the SCOTUS decision, further exacerbating these barriers.

Creating Career Advising Systems in an Increasingly Fragmented Environment
Tuesday April 29, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
The current environment of career advising is undergoing rapid upheavals and fragmentation as the transition to residency is marked by specialty-specific experimentation. Specialties that forgo established residency applications service like the Electronic Residency Application Service gain greater control but schools and students lose the ability to have a predictable process (1, 2). Even those specialties that have remain on ERAS are experimenting with their use of signaling and make decisions very close to the actual application deadline. Meanwhile, students expect career advising from very early points in the educational process and accreditation materials emphasize student perception of their advisors’ knowledge. (3) This places student affairs programs and advisors in a position where the knowledge is not entirely available but are evaluated based on the perception of how much they bear.

Mind the Gap: Navigating the Transition to Competency in a Norm-Referenced World
Tuesday April 29, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
Medical education is transitioning to assessing students in a competency-based framework. This not only aligns with GME evaluation of residents, but also ensures a focus on all learners meeting a minimum set of criteria and competencies prior to progression and graduation. This approach allows for a tailored evaluation of the learners and focuses on ensuring patient safety. This transition requires a cultural shift from the ‘best in class’ mentality or norm-referencing to one where all can (and should) meet the competencies to progress. In order to truly embrace a CBME framework, grades for courses should not be utilized as a focus on grades degrades from the focus on meeting competencies or at most, a pass/fail structure should be used.

Helping Applicants Tell Their Stories: Utilizing Other Impactful Experiences in the AMCAS Application Process
Tuesday April 29, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Beginning in the 2024 AMCAS application cycle, the self-reported disadvantaged status question was replaced with Other Impactful Experiences (OIE). The OIE section is intended to bolster holistic review of medical school applicants by identifying those who align with a medical school’s mission and the intended service community. In accordance with strategic priorities, for both the Association of American Medical Colleges, Group on Student Affairs and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP), it is imperative to offer guidance and best practices to medical school applicants on how best to share their lived experiences, including but not limited to family background, community setting, financial background, and educational experience.

Compassionate Off-Ramp Program
Tuesday April 29, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
A need exists for compassionate off-ramp programs (ORP) to help medical students who are withdrawn or dismissed from MD programs, due to academic failures or failure to pass Step 1, navigate into other programs that allow them to leave medical school without discrediting their hard work or incurring insurmountable amounts of debt. These students often turn to deans of students for guidance on their next steps, as their initial goal of becoming a doctor has not worked out, despite significant financial investment in tuition. Given the frequency of these scenarios, exploring alternate degree pathways that provide a strong return on investment is essential.

Foundation of medical education research: A systematic approach to paradigms, theories, & conceptual frameworks
Tuesday April 29, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
High quality medical education scholarship requires a clearly thought-out and well-articulated justification. To craft this background, a project team must identify a clear research question/problem statement while considering their perspective/paradigm about knowledge creation, the theories that help elucidate the question/problem, and how all of these components work together in a conceptual framework to lay the foundational background of the project. For medical educators at all levels, each of these steps is essential for successful dissemination of their work. This workshop will take participants through this approach to creating a well-considered conceptual framework to build high-quality medical education research projects.

Program Evaluation and Continuous Quality Improvement: Building Stronger Programs Together
Tuesday April 29, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Educational programs are, at the core, about change; therefore, effective program evaluation should focus on identifying and understanding planned and unplanned changes and connecting this new understanding to future iterations of the program (Fry & Hemmer, 2012). It is no surprise then that LCME Standard 1.1 calls for medical education programs to measure outcomes of both short and long-term programmatic goals and use these findings to improve educational program quality, or in other words engage in program (PE) and continuous educational quality improvement (CQI). However, knowing how to connect program evaluation with continuous quality improvement in a thoughtful, sustainable way can be daunting, especially to those in new roles or when programs have undergone major curriculum revisions. In addition, resources typically focus on either starting PE or CQI, but in reality, it is vital to have strong skills in each to tell the story of a medical school’s unique learning environment and student experience.

The Art of Healing: A Narrative Medicine Approach to Sexual and Reproductive Health
Tuesday April 29, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Medical students often perceive their sexual medicine training as inadequate, leading to discomfort in addressing patients' sexual health. Narrative medicine, a recent addition to medical training, offers a promising approach to enhance empathy, patient-centeredness, and humanism. By engaging in reflection and storytelling, participants can develop crucial communication skills such as self-awareness, observation, and empathy, which are particularly valuable when discussing sexual and reproductive health with patients.

Balancing the Demands of the Race for Competitiveness for Residencies with Medical Education
Tuesday April 29, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
The residency application process has become increasingly difficult for medical students and advisors to navigate1-2. The change of USMLE Step 1 pass fail scoring in 2022, introduction of virtual residency interviews, and widespread implementation of signaling have impacted the residency application review and selection process3-9. Programs have struggled with increasing application volumes and continue to look for ways to distinguish applicants for interview invitation10-11. While the overall NRMP Match rate has remained consistent over the past several years near 94%, the percentage of US MD Seniors matching into their preferred specialty has varied and can be close to 70% depending on the year for some of the more competitive specialties including dermatology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery12. As students struggle to distinguish themselves for applications, more emphasis has been placed on achieving higher step 2 scores, significant experiences, and research13. Students often feel overwhelmed balancing the demands of medical education with the demands to match into their desired specialty14.

Crafting Customized Clerkship Schedules: Finding Innovative Ways to Promote Personalization
Tuesday April 29, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
Experiences during medical school core clerkships have been a driving force regarding career aspirations and influencing specialty selection process (1). To help enhance the learning experience during clerkships, medical schools have created unique ways to ensure personalization, autonym, and ownership of their schedules. Although the order of rotations has shown not to impact a student’s learning abilities, students have mentioned that seeing a shelf exam during their first clerkship provides less stress on the remaining exams (2). Additionally, students mentioned feeling better about their clerkship rotations when their “most interested” specialty occurred in the middle and their “least interested” occurred at the beginning of their schedule (3).

Tuesday April 29, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
A diverse healthcare workforce is associated with improved care for underserved populations, increased access to healthcare, better patient satisfaction, and enhanced patient-provider communication. While the call to increase the diversity of the health care workforce has grown louder, many areas of healthcare continue to fall short of representing the makeup of the national population. The pipeline of students entering health professions is one clear target that must be addressed, but the hiring and recognition processes for health professions faculty is another important area which requires intentional attention to increased equity and inclusion.

Digital Scholarship in Academic Medicine: Challenges and Opportunities for Learner and Faculty
Tuesday April 29, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EDT
Digital scholarship in academic medicine and health profession is defined as scholarly activity that exclusively utilizes digital tools to create, share, disseminate, and advance scientific knowledge in the health profession. Social media, Artificial Intelligence and other online digital platforms are used as academic tools to advance scholarly discourse, changing the dialogue around the role and meaning of digital scholarship. Quantifying digital scholarship requires novel non-traditional metrics that are not well-defined or clearly stablished. The academic value of scholarly discourse in 21st century should encompass the use of non-traditional methods for advancing scientific knowledge such as podcasts, blogs, and other social media platforms. The utility of artificial intelligence systems such as generative AI, machine learning, and deep learning within digital platforms may allow categorization of user engagement in a manner not previously possible. As medical trainee and faculty increasingly participate in digital scholarship, there is a need to communicate, recognize, measure, and reward their individual and institutional contributions with academic integrity. It is imperative to explore the current status and articulate a structure for defining digital scholarship within the academic medicine framework. Our main objectives are to critically apprise current understanding of digital scholarship and its growing relevance in academic medicine and advancement of scientific knowledge. We will debate traditional and novel metrics for evaluating digital scholarship contributions and develop recommendations for integrating digital scholarship into career advancement and promotion in medical education and healthcare organization.

How to use Foundational and Clinical Science Integration Tools to Support Clinical Decision-Making Skills
Tuesday April 29, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EDT
Cognitive integration of foundational and clinical science remains a challenge, despite evidence suggesting that basic science is critical for clinical reasoning.1 There is a lack of tools and resources to assist educators in fostering cognitive integration. Foundational science educators often struggle to understand how their area of expertise translates into clinical practice and decision-making. Likewise, clinical educators often feel unprepared to quickly retrieve and apply their encapsulated foundational science knowledge in the context of patient care.2 New integration tools or learning models may serve to address these disconnects and facilitate cognitive integration3. Additionally, understanding the underlying basic science mechanisms of clinical presentations of pathologies could provide justification for clinical decisions and help prevent patient harm.3

Learner Leaders for Flourishing: connecting voices across the southern region
Tuesday April 29, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EDT
Leadership opportunities in medical school have been cited for their potential to enhance the experiences of medical students during training as well as the competencies of medical practice (Annan, Do and MacLeod, 2023). Leadership opportunities that intentionally connect students across medical schools may contribute to systems of support that help students navigate the many junctures of medical education (AAMC, 2023) and potentially address issues of medical student burnout (Dyrbye, Thomas and Shanafelt, 2006). Focusing leadership on a flourishing approach may go even further in producing future physicians ready to take on the complexities of the contemporary healthcare system both for themselves and their patients (Boudreau, Cruess and Cruess, 2011; VanderWeele, McNeely and Koh 2019; Kay, Pavlic and Ruffalo, 2023).

Leave of Absence Policies and Processes: Opportunities for Cross Department Collaboration
Wednesday April 30, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
Following the 2022 switch of USMLE-Step 1 to Pass/Fail grading, the national pass rate declined 3 percentage-points, as schools and students adjusted to this new paradigm. Feedback from medical schools across the country report a resulting increase in students needing to take leave of absences in response to this transition. Leave of absence policies and processes that provide both students and administrators clear guidelines for taking time away from education and returning to enrolled status allows medical schools to support students in their most vulnerable moments.

The Perils of 3M: Micromanagement, Microaggression, and Micro-incivility in Medical Education and Clinical Care
Wednesday April 30, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) are roadmaps for growth and development of trainees in undergraduate medical education (UME) and graduate medical education (GME) for their professional development in a conducive learning environment. Many educators and supervisors show behaviors that can be perceived by trainees as micromanaging, microaggressions and/or micro-incivility (3M) in their teaching and supervision. These 3M behaviors are often unintentional with lack of understanding about psychological safety and/or cultural humility, and require better understanding of distribution and patterns that can impact patient wellbeing and safety.

Is It Time to Detach USMLE from Curricular Requirements for Student Well-Being and Professional Identity Formation?
Wednesday April 30, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
• The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) program serves to administer a series of assessments longitudinally across medical education to ensure that future physicians meet baseline competency for independent clinical practice. Through the current system of USMLE integration within medical school education, passing Step 1 and 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) exams is required for both application to residency programs and graduation from undergraduate medical education (UME). While the original intentions of such standardized exams were to establish benchmarks for medical knowledge and clinical competence, the current high-stakes system has diverged to the point that USMLE performance is now the single most defining factor utilized in residency consideration. Over-prioritization of USMLE exams by curriculum developers and program directors alike has heightened stress levels and intensified reliance on parallel curricula, where use of third-party resources far outweighs genuine engagement in formal medical school curriculum and education due to perceived inadequacy of classroom didactics in preparing students for board exams. For this reason,

Cultivating Self-Regulated Learners: Leveraging AI in Foundational Science Courses
Wednesday April 30, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) offers timely opportunities to enhance learner-centered instruction in medical education. AI fosters self-regulated learning skills during the pre-clerkship years to improve learning efficiency. As students adjust to medical school's pace, they often face challenges in foundational science courses due to ineffective learning strategies. Integrating AI tools, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), can address these challenges by personalizing learning and promoting effective study habits. This workshop provides educators with strategies to incorporate AI, optimizing student performance and self-regulation. The session aligns with trends in instructional design and personalized learning.
